Hodinkee Weekend: Rolex Price Hikes, And Daniel Craig's MoonSwatch - HODINKEE

Welcome to our new weekend column. Think of this as a catch-up session for latecomers who were too 'busy living their lives' to consume every tiny morsel of watch content all week, and an extra helping for the true friends who just can't get enough. "New Watch Alert" will feature new watch releases from the week past, "In Case You Missed It" a collection of our favorites that deserve a second look, "Culture of Time" will highlight an interesting article from outside the Hodinkee universe, and "The Conversation" is where we respond to your comments. Grab your Saturday-morning coffee, and let's dig in.

The weekend is finally here, which means LVMH Watch Week is but a (sort of) distant memory. We saw a flurry of watches drop from Bulgari, Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Zenith during the trade show taking place across the globe in Singapore. Meanwhile, Daniel Craig checked in to say hello and to remind us the MoonSwatch is still very much a thing in 2023. We even saw the latest from Porsche Design and ended the week with a ton of variety from Alain Silberstein to Christopher Ward to a collectors guide on Blancpain.

New Watch Alert

Nobody writes introductory coverage quite like our Senior Writer Sarah Miller who has thoughts – deep thoughts – on the latest Oris Big Crown with in-house caliber 473. We won't spoil anymore here, you'll just have to check out the piece for yourself.

Senior Writer James Stacey may not be attending the GP Ice Race this year (sorry James), but he did get a chance to go hands-on with one of the coolest new releases of 2023. For some absolutely gorgeous photos – and some nice words too – don't miss his latest review.

If you ever wanted to know what SAXEM was, look no further as Sarah Miller delivers some of the finest introductory coverage of this young year on a positively wild — and very yellow — Hublot. This story is part of our entire lineup of LVMH Watch Week coverage, so when you're done reading this one, check out our other stories as well.

In our first Business News coverage of the new year, Mark Kauzlarich dives deep into the data behind Rolex's recent price-hike exploring the past, present and future of  the economics of the Crown.  If you're stuck on a waitlist for a steel Rolex sports watch, this is a story you will definitely want to read this weekend.

As Senior Editor Danny Milton points out in the opening line of this story, "MoonSwatch never dies." And while we have covered the watch on numerous occasions and have correctly labeled it a cultural phenomenon,  it's safe to say that none of us expected 007 to be donning a Mission to Neptune with a full suit.

Buying, Selling, & Collecting: A Total Beginner's Guide To Collecting The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms

Blancpain

Sure it may have only been published yesterday, but we feel compelled to share it again – especially for those of you who miss the Old Hodinkee where every story was a million words long. (It lives!) Our resident vintage expert, Tony Traina, nerds out in this compendium of all things Fifty Fathoms. Make sure you're sitting somewhere comfortable for this one.

This is a question I think a lot of us have whether or not we are looking to sell a watch, or are simply curious as to how such  processes work from an auction, or even an insurance, perspective. Lucky for us, we have some pretty incredible colleagues here at the 'Dink. Our own Director of Insurance, Marc Hajjar, recently sat down with Platform to apply his years of knowledge on this subject and answer the tough questions on what is generally considered to be a topic shrouded in mystery. Hit the link and head over to Platform to read their interview with Marc.

The Conversation
Daniel Craig MoonSwatch

The Comments: 1. This is a really cool surprise, James Bond is one of my (if not) my most favorite fictitious character. (Right next to Batman & Indiana Jones). In regards to the watch, I'm indifferent with the swatch brand, but the collab with Omega is pretty cool. But since Daniel Craig wore it, I admit I may wanna get one now.

2. Every time you think everything has been said about this watch, the next MS article appears. 😞."

The Response: Does it get much better than these two comments? Two sides of the coin. And the story itself gets to heart of what MoonSwatch is beginning to represent – and why Craig was seen wearing this watch at the National Board of Review Awards last weekend. At $260 the watch sits at a price point that's just expensive enough for those not used to seeing watches in the many (many) thousands of dollars, but also inexpensive enough to pick up on a whim. This commenters indifference-turned-enthusiasm speaks to the MoonSwatch's constant tear through the known universe. Now, we can contrast that to the other commenter lamenting Craig's having worn the watch AND the fact that we continue to cover the MoonSwatch here on Hodinkee. At this point, it's a watch that's hard to ignore, and the hype is far from dying down. In the end, we can thank James Bond for giving MoonSwatch a second wind.
