Hulu Price Increase: Ad-Supported, Premium Plans Going Up Starting Next Month - Decider

The day has come, and we were warned: Hulu is hiking its prices. The streamer, which is one of the more affordable options in the ever-expanding market, is increasing its monthly subscription costs starting next month.

Hulu shared the information with subscribers in an email sent out yesterday. Beginning Oct. 10, the price of Hulu’s plans will go up by a couple of bucks per month, with the ad-supported tier jumping from $6.99 to $7.99, or $79.99 per year. Hulu’s premium plan, which cuts out the ads altogether, will also increase a bit more substantially, going up $2 from $12.99 to $14.99.

Subscribers will be paying a bit more to watch some of Hulu’s hits, which include Only Murders in the Building, The Handmaid’s Tale and Dopesick, plus a slew of excellent FX shows, including The Patient, The Old Man and Under the Banner of Heaven. And there’s even more on the streamer — check out all the titles coming to Hulu in September.

Hulu’s new prices bring it closer in cost to competitors like HBO Max and Netflix. HBO Max, one of the pricier streamers, costs $9.99 per month with ads or $14.99 per month without ads. Netflix’s basic plan begins at $9.99 per month and its most expensive option currently costs $19.99 per month.

While nearly $20 may sound like a lot to pay for Stranger Things and Too Hot to Handle, Netflix is reportedly launching an ad-supported tier as soon as November, which is sure to bring a little relief to subscribers’ wallets.

As Hulu’s prices jump, so will the costs of Disney+ and ESPN+, which are owned by the same parent company as Hulu. While Hulu’s price jump starts in just a few weeks, Disney+ subscribers have a bit more time before their bills increase. Starting in December, ad-free Disney+ will jump $3 from $7.99 to $10.99. The streamer’s ad-supported version will be available Dec. 8 for $7.99 per month.

ESPN+ subscribers already experienced their price hike with the sports-forward streamer raised its monthly price to $9.99 in August.
