Relief at pump not likely anytime soon as gas prices hit another record - KWCH

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Gas prices in Wichita have jumped another 30 cents. Now, some stations are selling it for $4.59 a gallon. Premium is $5.09 and diesel is $5.19.

Prior to the Monday mid-morning hike, AAA (Triple-A) said the average gas price for Kansas was $4.43 a gallon and $4.86 a gallon nationwide.

A week ago, the average gas price of gas for Kansas was $4.13. The average price was $3.92 last month, and $2.85 last year.

The national average for unleaded gas is $4.86 per gallon. That’s a new record and many drivers are paying even more. Experts warn not to expect much relief anytime soon.

The price hike in Wichita Monday was a jump of nearly 30 cents at some stations. Drivers are taking notice.

Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas said how drivers respond to ever-increasing prices is different for everyone.

“I think that’s going to be a very individual decision on how those gas prices fit into the household budget,” he said.

Demand for oil and gas already increases in the summer. After two years of a pandemic keeping many at home, Steward said this year, that demand isn’t going anywhere.

“People really want to get back out there and see places and see people they haven’t been able to see for awhile,” he said.

For some families, that means considering ways to still travel while finding ways to save.

“These gas prices surely are going to maybe shorten their trips or look at other ways they can save during their road trip, maybe staying at less expensive hotels or doing less expensive or free attractions or activities on their vacation,” Steward said.

He said where prices goin next could all depend on how we respond.

“If people start adjusting their driving habits, scaling back their driving, reducing the demand for gasoline because of the prices, if demand goes down, prices could possibly go down some.”

Eyewitness News asked Steward, could Kansas hit $5 per gallon for a gallon of unleaded gas. He said that’s possible, but we are not yet at near that point. The silver lining is that Kansas still has the third lowest gas prices in the country.

Here is a reminder on some things you can do to save on fuel.

  • Check you car’s air filter, making sure it’s clean.
  • Make sure your car’s tires are properly aired up to the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch). You’ll find that information inside the driver’s side door on your car.
  • Go lighter on the accelerator. The easier you accelerate, the better your mileage and the more you save at the pump.
